CALLUM STORMS IN AS SAINTS CHOPPED DOWN...

St Julians HSOB 7 Rhymney 38

This was just a very good all-round performance by a confident attacking and sound defensive Brewers' side, with not a weak link on the day and some very good tries among the six which had earned a bonus point, with four before the half hour. The wind was behind Rhymney's first half efforts on a pitch in great condition but where they had not previously found it easy. Storm Callum had relented on the rain, though, and as Rhymney flooded forward hardworking flanker and lineout man Callum Merrick fittingly marked the day with one of those touchdowns. By then great scrummaging and fast hands behind, as fly half Ollie Hughes took it to the line and passed well outside Lloyd White's relaible service, had brought exciting scores from Joey Buckley, Corey Evans and Kyron Moss (from the Brewers' signature 'up the middle by Buckley' move). Corey's brother 'Tryler' Evans was unlucky (as was Joel Edwards later) not to make it four in four for him as he dashed over from 25 metres only for the ref to rule a knock on in touching down. Liam Davies, playing the skipper's role nicely, added three conversions and the bonus was safe before the break. Clearly it was harder against the elements, but tackling was sound for 65 minutes before a sidestep by a bulky host player wrongfooted Rhymney and brought a converted try for a Saints side which never gave up. Davies had by then added one of his customary tries from a nice combined move (he never has to dive for any of his scores!) and added the kick. Kyron Moss, very prominent on the day, added his second with a nice finish and the forwards drove on into the wind, with well-merited Man of the Match, lock Sam Williams, well to the fore. Sam Turner made a welcome sub return and won a vital turnover, Chrissie Richards and Connor Gregory were everywhere and Jamie Rowlands, Keane De'Arth (debut), Corey Burton and Keaton Pardoe (briefly!) also saw replacement action. The referee appeared to end the action a little early, but the win was well secured and the Brewers (who have been drawn at home to Dolgellau in the WRU Bowl and away at RTB Ebbw Vale in the Ben Francis Cup) now face a tough challenge when unbeaten Llanhilleth come to the park on one of Meredydd James' Reunion days on Saturday. All welcome, as you are for the President's Dinner on Friday 26th October: see Dale Zddzieblo or Phil Atkinson to book - quickly! Cheers, Akky.
