80-POINTER AS BREWERS BUFFET BRAVE BEAUFORT

Rhymney 80 Beaufort 0

Following a recent 20-16 home frendly win over neighbours Deri, Jamie Rowlands' men got back into League action with a rearranged clash against beleaguered Beaufort under Friday night lights at the Park. Even bearing in mind the visitors' struggles and inexperience, it was a warming joy for fans on a frosty night to see the fast, open, offloading and supporting game the Brewers played, especailly in a rampant first half when the scrum was surging forward and good ball was splendidly used. The half time score of 61-0 was surely a record for any Rhymney side at any time, and there were visions of a tally to match that suffered by Rhymney themselves at Ynysddu a few years back. However, the respective front row changes made after the interval saw Beaufort much improved at scrum time, momentum slowed and a battling effort form them resticted the Brewers to three late scores. Two of those were converted by Liam Davies, making it 10 conversions out of the 12 tries scored in all, one by himself, and his distribution on the night was generally excellent. in fact, well judged passing and good lines of support running was the hugely welcome feature of the points bonanza, and can hopefully be maintained when possible against stronger opposition, such as the Hafodyrynys side immediately above the Brewers in the table and who host Rhymney ths coming Saturday. Everybody put in a decent shift in the Beaufort game, flanker Dai Davies marking his return to the club with a hard-charging display, Sam Turner, Daley Morris and especially Andrew Barnett hard workers with more than a touch of skill, the front row solid especially in the first half, and the backs tackling strongly and a constant threat. Tries, many of them spectacular, came from skipper Rowlands with a hat-trick, wings Kyron Moss and Joey Buckley (two apiece), full back Ieuan Breen with a lovely line, fly half Huw Reynolds who was able to move on the good ball won, Dai Davies, Liam Davies and at the death, Andrew Barnett, whose plunge made up for his throwing the ball away when about to score an even better effort earlier! All credit to the visitors for preventing an even bigger landslide: hopefully they can recover and keep turning out teams for the rest of the campaign. The Rhymney record books, meanwhile, are being checked to see if this is the biggest ever League total and margin. Hafod away on the 26th is another matter, though!
