Rhymney 0 Machen 43

The 100%, 11 from 11, visitors from down the valley duly brushed aside the Brewers' challenge on the muddy but playable Park. Despite some brave individual showings in a somewhat makeshift Rhymney line-up, Machen had too much up front and behind and scored four tries in the first half and three in the second, when the floodgates threatened to, but didn't quite open. Two early converted tries set the tone, then Rhymney had a good ten minutes of pressure but without reward. Instead, Machen worked a corner overlap for 19-0 and despite the brave efforts of No. 9 Lloyd White and emergency No. 8 Chrissy Richards, and the counter attacking readiness of Joey Buckley and Kyron Moss, the Brewers were often on the back foot. The fourth try, just before the break, came rather too easily, and was converted for 26-0 at the break. By then the Brewers' ace points man, centre Liam Davies, was back in the stand, nursing a shoulder knock incurred as he slipped out a lovely delayed pass, and despite the best efforts of subs including Gareth Lewis and permit men David Hynam and Steve Mumford, it was mostly a question of 'how many' in the second period. Two yellow cards didn't help, but to their credit, after a loose throw back had led to a fifth Machen try, Rhymney continued to chase and harry and generally get in some scramble defence, and with the muddy ball defying Machen hands on several occasions, there were only two more scores. Still, a sobering afternoon against a confident and quite fluent leading outfit, and watching Aberbargoed may not have been too worried by what they saw ahead of the Brewers short trip there next Saturday. Still, if Rhymney can put out more of their best side and win some ball, you never know: it was a close thing in the Park clash back in September. Before the return, don't forget the President's Dinner, stll some availability for Friday 20th's great night in prospect, see Dale Zdzieblo.
