FURIOUS FINALE AS BREWERS PUT SAINTS TO THE SWORD

St Julians 13 Rhymney 24

It was alright in the end for Chris Richards and his young Brewers as they survived a tired looking first half against a burly St Julians, Newport outfit to hit back with a bit of style: and also lived through 13 mysterious minutes of stoppage time and a couple of hefty dust ups as the hosts decided to leave some sort of a mark on this last outing! Satsfaction, then, as three lovely tries were scored, two late on after St Julians had led 10-0 early on, 10-7 at the break and 13-10 with what should have been 7 minutes left. In Paris fashion for France v Wales, it turned out to be 20 minutes! The Saints took the opening exchanges, driving on with some raw boned, aggressive and experienced forwards, a chunky 10 and a determined centre. Some sloppier-than-normal Rhymney tackling didn't help, and the hosts led through a nicely supported move for a converted try, then a penalty. Gradually the Brewers got into the game, steadied the scrum and won improved lineout ball when the wind they were facing was successfully taken inrto account. A nice angle saw Liam Davies put pacy centre Joey Buckley over at the posts and Davies added the extras, and Ieuan Breen who tackled strongly, also ran a great line but his 'scoring' pass was deemed forward. After the break, though suffering a yellow card just before, and with the breeze, Rhymney bucked up and started some drives of their own, though penalties for holding on and errors in contact were also frequent. Eventually, and with plenty of subs coming on, Liam Davies levelled things with a penalty, but the hosts were keen to make it physical and when they drove to the posts won a kick iof their own to grab the lead. Chris Richards rallied the troops, though, heads went up, not down, and after scrum pressure Davies and Buckley worked a dummy scissors so effective that Davies could wait seconds under the bar before touching down and converting. The game restarted, and went on...and on... Jack Donegan, often dangerous, ran well and tackled his opponent, who took exception. Massive but ineffective handbags followed and the referee decided not to blow it up but started again. Two yellows inevitably followed but the clock ticked on and Rhymney launched a super counter attacking try through young Evans, slightly older lock Barnard and then ageless no 8 Richards, who all handled beautifully for 55 metres for a skipper's try converted off the post by Davies. 'Fergie time' astonishingly continued, but after one more scuffle and one more Brewers' attack, even the ref had seen enough and the season had come to a happy and promising end. Well done you young men (and a few older) and your coaching team. Good luck to the Youth XV now in their semi at home to Newbridge and, hopefully, beyond. Cheers, Akky.
