DOUBLE DERBY DELIGHT FOR ABER AS BREWERS OFF BOIL

Aberbargoed 53 Rhymney 22

The Rhymney squad will owe dedicated and disappointed coach Sean Murphy big turnouts and bigger efforts in training this week and on the Park against visitors St Julians on Saturday, after a second half trouncing down the valley at Aberbargoed last weekend. Conceding after about 25 seconds after the kick off was allowed to bounce free for a vonverted try, they hit back with a Liam Davies penalty and his conversion of the first of permit wing Jake Howard's two tries. Leading 10-7 and looking as lively as the hosts for some time, the Brewers then started to find the fierce ball carrying of the home pack a real handful. A typical driving maul led to a second Aber converted try, and as Rhymney's defence began to look uncharacteristically porous, not helped by a yellowcard, a pair of home penalties stretched the lead to 20-10 at the break on a cold, grey day. There was still plenty of visitors' hope at that stage, as long as ball could be won, but set piece pressure increased and tackling began - literally - to fall away. When a loose clearing kick was run back at them, the Brewers' left big holes and the eager hosts got another well converted try. The leggy, experienced home centre and stocky fly half were time and again exposing Rhymney for pace and positioning, and it was unusual to see the Brewers' midfield so discomfited. 'You can't coach defence on a Saturday', Murphy is bound to remind his troops - especially the non-trainers! A sparkling run from hardworkinhg flanker Connor Gregory helped set up Davies' clever crossfield kick for Howard to again show his try-scoring paces, Davies converting, but immediately that centre strolled, chipped and sprinted for another home seven pointer. Mike Green, Rhys Watkins, Tyler Evans and a larger than before Huw Reymnolds all got sub action for Rhymney, and as the Brewers' ball and defensive cover dried up, another converted try followed. Rhymney mounted a bit of pressure and two home yellows resulted. A fine long Reynolds pass put Kyron Moss over at the flag, but that was as good as it got. 13 men or not, the rampant homesters added two more tries through good charges, pace and support, and a first 50 pointer against Rhymney for some time was wrapped up. Hopefully the last for a long time, too. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, please boys! Akky.
