BRAVE BREWERS BOYS BOMBED BY BLAINA....

Rhymney 10 Blaina 55

This looks, and seemingly was, a rude awakening after the previous week's thrilling win, but the context needs looking at before any over-hasty conclusions are reached. The bumps from the New Tredegar opener robbed the Brewers of both their skipper and their scrum half, there were three or four more first choices unavailable for that weekend and in the absence of Youth players (unlike last campaign) able to step up, thin on the ground was an understatement. The boys were determined to play though, even if they had been short-handed, and were able to start, though with passive scrums, only to quickly lose a prop: veteran and valiant emergency help was again provided. They didn't quite have to turn to Meredydd James and his touchline Old Boys, but must have wished they could as a very useful and different Blaina from last year turned the screw. It was very hard work for the hosts, but as both coach Murphy and stand-in skipper Daley Morris said, they were hugely proud of the commitment and effort shown by those who were available. The home points came with another try by wing Jack Donegan and a penalty and conversion by fly half Steve Lang. On Saturday Rhymney are due to go over to Blaina in the WRU Bowl, and then to Llanhilleth in the League on Sat 23rd September.
