TWELVE TRY TRIUMPH AS ST JULIANS ARE 'CHOPPED' DOWN...

Rhymney 72 St Julians 20

A sunsoaked stroll at the Park for the Brewers saw Liam Davies bag 31 points (five tries and three conversions and a good captaincy decision to let 'Deadeye' Ieuan Breen take the other three) and get a yellow in a busy day. This win may well prove to have been the team's highest League tally of points, but Liam's impressive totals on the day remain short of the legend David Pulsford's 38 pts in a game (in three-point try days of the 1960's!) and Dai Nicholas' seven-try haul in the mid 1990's.

The visitors turned up with a bare 15 but were brave throughout, not helped by the heat and the pace of the home backs (and of Chrissie Richards when he came on at No.8!). The try bonus point took only 19 minutes or so to amass, Liam at centre and partner Joey Buckley grabbing a brace apiece, Davies converting two, and the mazy-running Kyron Moss robbed of a great score by a touch judge who perhaps had sweat in his eyes.....

When the Saints were allowed to drive on up front their heftiness was a strength rather than a panting weakness about the field, and they grabbed a score before scrum half Callum Ryan pounce to race to the posts, Davies converting. The visitors got another for 36-10 at the break, and a sub's knock-on of their kick off saw them get another straight from the restart to keep them interested. Rhymney's second yellow didn't help, but then Moss got his deserved try improved by full back Breen, who also converted another of Davies' fine efforts on his return to the field.

There were subs made, with no greater impact than that of Richards, who broke and flew upfield before fine hands saw wing Jack Donegan race over to bring up the half-century. The brave if battered Saints were delighted with a fourth try and a bonus point for themselves, but another Rhymney replacement, Scott Davidson, got the next home touchdown before Davies, hardworking flanker Corey Evans, then Davies again with his fifth, crossed. Breen converted one, for a 72-20 total and a final whistle (five minutes early) from the merciful official.

The Brewers go to Hafodyrynys this Tuesday evening (8th May) and there's a big one at the park next Saturday 12th when high flying neighbours Deri hope to celebrate promotion with a double, and with Meredydd james' rejigged Joly Old Boys' Outing invites all former players back to the Club for the afternoon and evening. Don't miss it.

Markham, who kindly allowed the rearrangement of the Deri clash to go ahead, are choosing a midweek date in the week after the 12th to host the Brewers' last outing of the campaign. The Seniors' Club Awards function is set for Saturday 2nd June at the Clubhouse.
