In a noisy and cheerful Clubhouse last Saturday the Youth and Senior XVs of the Rhymney RFC met to receive - or acclaim - the Awards for their successful seasons. President Phil Atkinson, Chair Justin Pinch, stepping-down Vice Chair Lee Berry and coach Sean Murphy all addressed the healthy-sized gathering of players and partners and stressed the fine efforts, spirit and potential of both XVs during an optimistic campaign which had re-enthused and impressed fans and backroom staff. 'Up the Brewers' was definitely the theme of the evening as the silverware was spread about and the drinks and banter flowed. The Seniors' 55% return, several of the Youth stepping up successfully, the Youth XV finishing second in their League and the splendidly spirited and fearless displays often shown were all pleasing, as were young Callum Merrick's Wales Boys' Clubs call up and the choice of four of the Under 15s for nexy year's Dragons Academy. Great! Less happy was the tragic news of the passing of former Junior player Liam Bannister, with a minute's silence and the sympathy of all going to the family of that fine, talented young man. Before Daley Morris was able to show why he didn't win Karaoke star of the year, the real awards went as follows:
YOUTH XV:
Players' Player of the Year - Callum Merrick
Player of the Year (and Captain's Blazer) - Tyler Evans
Most Improved Forward - Rees Bevan
Most Improved Back - Lloyd Pearce
Most Promising Forward - Owen Bennett
Most Promising Back - Lloyd White
Clubman - Braden Yeoman
Most tries - Connor Thomas
Highest points - Liam Davies
Noticeably, five of these have also turned out this season for the Senior side, and there the trophies were picked up as follows:
SENIOR XV and CLUB OVERALL:
Players' Player of the Year - Joey Buckley
Player of the Year, Most Promising Player & Most Points (251) - Liam Davies
Clubman of the Year - popular returning Club Steward Steve Crane
Most Appearances - versatile ever-present Corey Evans
Most Tries Joey Buckley (14)
Character of the Year - stand-in skipper Chris Richards
Supporter of the Year - Richard Worley
Fly half Liam Davies' performance is all the more remarkable in picking up two of the 'chosen' awards at Senior level as well as one at Youth, but also the leading points scorer for both XVs while still eligible for Youth rugby. He has set the bar high for himself! He celebrated not only with the cups but also by showing off his lovely new baby boy. Congrats all round: Cheers, Akky.
