Coaching Tips - U7/U8

HANDLING

Key Outcomes - Under 7

By the end of u7 the player will be able to:

  • Pass the ball accurately to a stationary receiver.
  • Understand the idea of "sympathy" of pass - making it easy for the receiver to catch the ball.
  • Catch the ball in two hands while standing still.
  • Pick up a stationary ball.

 

Key Outcomes - Under 8

By the end of u8 the player will be able to:

  • Pass accurately, backwards to a moving receiver.
  • Pass "sympathetically".
  • Catch a ball while moving.
  • Pick up a rolling ball.
  • Key Coaching Factors
  • Passer - ball in two hands.
  • Look at receiver's hands.
  • Hands pointing at receiver when ball is released
  • Move ball across body.
  • Receiver -call for the ball
  • Hands up as a target for the passer.
  • Look at the ball.

 

EVASION

Key Outcomes - u7

By the end of u7 the player will be able to:

  • Understand the idea that you have to go forward to score.
  • Carry the ball in two hands.
  • Use evasion skills to avoid being tagged.

 

Key outcomes - u8

By the end of u8 the player will be able to:

  • Take the ball forward.
  • Carry the ball in two hands.
  • Use evasion skills to avoid being tagged.
  • Understand the idea of support for the ball carrier.

Key Coaching Factors

  • Look for space
  • Run through gaps
  • Go forward
  • Light on your feet
  • Low centre of gravity
  • Run into space
  • Ball in 2 hands
  • Change of direction
  • Follow the Ball Carrier

DEFENCE

Key Outcomes - Under 7

By the end of U7 the player will be able to

Ø  Identify the ball carrier

Ø  Successfully complete TAG tackles

Key Coaching Factors

  • Through playing TAG related games, players on the defending side are able to identify the ball carrier as the primary threat.
  • Through playing TAG related games, players on the defending side are able to complete TAG tackles by successfully removing the TAG's from attacking players belts.

Key Outcomes - Under 8

By the end of U8 the player will be able to -

  • Complete key outcomes from under 7's rugby
  • Maintain a defensive line

Key Coaching Factors

  • Through playing TAG related games, players are able to identify the primary threat of the ball carrier, and successfully complete TAG tackles by safely removing the TAG belts.
