Coaching Tips - U13/U14

HANDLING

Key Outcomes - Under 13

  • 2 v 1, 3 v 1, 3 v 2 attackers v live defence
  • 2 v 2 - Running Lines, Unders and Overs
  • Unopposed loop and switch

Key Coaching Factors

  • Push Pass
  • Arms bent receiving
  • Arms straight passing
  • Spin - power hand underneath coming over ball
  • Direction hand top/side
  • Hips facing forward

Key Outcomes - Under 14

  • Minimum standard a 5 metre pass - without receiver drifting [falling away].
  • Be able to execute all previous age group passing skills at increased pace in game situation.
  • Opposed loop and switch

Key Coaching Factors

  • 14 - 16s
  • Push pass.
  • As previous age groups [refined]
  • Elbow bent, fingers spread around ball for control
  • Ball to follow one plane of movement across the chest
  • Hands to finish towards the target
  • Look at the ball, catch the ball, turn head and look at target, pass the ball.
  • Spin pass
  • Focus on wrist action!
  • Bottom hand to create spin
  • Top hand to guide direction and complete spin.

EVASION

Key Outcomes - u13/14

By the end of u11/12 players will be able to:

  • transfer the idea of going forward to score into a contact game.
  • use the side-step, swerve and spin to avoid being tackled.
  • take a tackle safely and in control.
  • control the ball after the tackle - pass it or place it.

Key Coaching Factors -u13/14

Side step

  • Make defender move.
  • Judge the distance from the would-be tackler
  • Plant foot and change direction
  • Accelerate away from defender

Spin

  • Make defender move
  • Plant foot and spin across defender
  • Accelerate away from defender

Ball management in the tackle situation

  • Hold ball with 2 hands.
  • Keep ball away from defender
  • Strong grip on the ball

Pass out of tackle

  • Go forward
  • Get as far to the side of the tackler as possible by use of side step, swerve or spin
  • Accelerate in contact
  • Free the arms
  • Support player to react to space created.

Ball Placement

  • Body facing where ball carrier came from
  • Long arm placement
  • Protect the head

DEFENCE

Defence - Under 13s

  • 15 a side
  • Full IRB Tackle Laws Apply.

Key Outcomes - Under 13

By the end of U13s the player will be able to -

  • Successfully and safely complete front/ side/rear tackle technique
  • Appreciate the importance of gain line and tackle lines from various phases
  • Introduce Line Discipline
  • Understand and execute drift defence

  • Concentrate on tackle technique.
  • Head Position

  • Leg Drive
  • Finishing Position
  • Highlight both and differentiate as well as identify from various game situations
  • Various Line Speed spacing of defenders depending on opposition, line speed when approaching tackle situation

Defence - Under 14s

  • 15 a side
  • Full IRB Tackle Laws Apply.

Key Outcomes - Under 14

  • By the end of U14s the player will be able to -
  • Successfully and safely complete front/ side/rear tackle technique
  • Win Space beyond contact area.
  • Utilise a number of contest techniques at breakdown if required
  • Understand the roles and responsibilities at a double tackle situation
  • Able to complete a Turtle tackle

  • Leg Drive
  • Finishing Position
  • Win Collision with supporting player and counter-ruck beyond the ball to win space.
  • Utilise various techniques to turnover ball.
  • Judo Roll

  • Smash / Wipe-out
  • Identify whether player 1 or 2 in tackle situation and successfully execute turnover
  • Ensure ball carrier finishes on back, resulting in their poor body position/ presentation and increased likelihood of turnover
